If you have a Fuji or Olympus camera, you are probably out of luck.  I believe both these brands of cameras erase/format by completely erasing the data.

My first suggestion is to get a USB card reader.  You can get one of these at your local electronics store.  I got a 6-in-1 reader that reads SmartMedia, Compact Flash, MMC, SD and Memory Sticks for $5 at a local computer store.  Make sure you get one that can read the kind of media that you have.
Once you installed the card reader, take your media card out of your camera and put it into the reader.  Open up My Computers and the reader should show up as one of your removable drives.  At this point, you should be able to download one of the programs listed in my links page and try to recover your pictures.

Most of these programs will show you thumbnails of the pictures that it can recover.  If this is the case, you can probably pay to purchase the program and recover your pictures.  If you cannot see any thumbnails of the pictures that you have lost, you probably need someone with more technical expertise for your situation.  Email me at golfer617@lycos.com for more information about my services or send your media card to a professional data recovery service.
